How Danish architecture has influenced the world

You might not realize it, but Danish architecture can often be found in almost every major city around the world. The unique style of design takes its inspiration from thousand of years of influence and can be dated back to the early Viking age.

Over time, different periods of history have helped to shape the distinctive design, and now, in the 21st century, Danish architecture has influenced some of the most well-known and instantly recognizable buildings in the world.

What is modern and contemporary Danish architecture?

The modern Danish architecture style began around the 1930s, with the introduction of functionalism. One of the most famous architects from this era, Arne Jacobsen, is responsible for several well-known buildings in Denmark, such as Aarhus City Hall. However, Danish architecture was not confined to Denmark, with the most famous example being the Sydney Opera House, which was built by Jørn Utzon.

Danish architecture continued to spread across the globe thanks to the likes of Bjarke Ingels, who was voted one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2016. From there, the style naturally progressed into the contemporary design that we see being used today. This style of architecture places emphasis on natural light, comfort, and, above all, sustainable energy solutions.

Since then, however, Danish architects have helped to shape the landscapes of countless major cities by designing and creating buildings such as the Museum of Liverpool in the UK, Two World Trade Centre in New York and Google’s North Bayshore Campus.
